Heads I Win - Tails I Win! I Win!

For those who care about the upcoming Presidential election (which is most normal people), they will have a preference -- maybe a little or maybe a lot!  For those with strong opinions, the result usually is either:

Delight and glee if their candidate wins – typically leading to "resting" in the victory.
OR
Despair and giving up if their aspirant loses.

The devil typically wins in either case.

What is the Bible answer so that Heads I Win – Tails I Win!

  • Do NOT despair and give up if evil prevails, but understand "When sin abounds, grace abounds all the more!" (Romans 5:20) It is stupid and wrong to want the immoral to win – but when they do (for a short while) we should make the best of it. Another four years, like the last eight, will make some people wake up and realize they don't want to follow the wicked!
  • Be happy if the better candidate wins, but see this as an opportunity, not an end in itself.

So, the important question is not whether Gore or Bush wins, but whether you win!

Good Grace on Tuesday (and thereafter!)

The Bible documents some good Kings in Israel, but too often, when they assumed the throne, the "high places" were not removed – little of lasting value was accomplished. Every generation has the opportunity to tear down the "high places" that have been wickedly constructed in their midst. Yet, few have a long-lived impact – most live with the existing high places rather than challenging and destroying them.

Who could have imagined, a few short years ago, the cost associated with America’s "high place" of abortion "rights"? Who would dare touch this sacred idol and high place?  Victimization – another new idol and high place: "Let’s do wicked and vile things and then blame someone else!"

Others champion decriminalizing more and more – then maybe we can live within the lowered standards (dare we call them laws)! But, alas, we find the high places simply increase – wickedness has an insatiable appetite!

As we see in First and Second Kings:

Jeroboam built shrines on high places and appointed priests from all sorts of people, even though they were not Levites. 1KI 12:31

They also set up for themselves high places, sacred stones and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every spreading tree. 1KI 14:23

In everything Jehoshaphat walked in the ways of his father Asa and did not stray from them; he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. The high places, however, were not removed, and the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there. 1KI 22:43

Joash did what was right . . . The high places, however, were not removed; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there. 2KI 12:2-3

Amaziah did what was right . . . The high places, however, were not removed; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there. 2KI 14:3-4

Azariah did what was right . . . The high places, however, were not removed; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there. 2KI 15:3-4

Jotham did what was right . . . The high places, however, were not removed; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there. Jotham rebuilt the Upper Gate of the temple of the Lord. 2KI 15:34-35

Compare this with:

Hezekiah removed the high places, smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles. 2KI 18:4

Josiah brought all the priests from the towns of Judah and desecrated the high places, from Geba to Beersheba, where the priests had burned incense. He broke down the shrines at the gates – at the entrance to the Gate of Joshua. 2KI 23:8

Just as he had done at Bethel, Josiah removed and defiled all the shrines at the high places that the kings of Israel had built in the towns of Samaria that had provoked the Lord to anger. 2KI 23:19

Josiah slaughtered all the priests of those high places on the altars and burned human bones on them. 2KI 23:20

He removed the high places and incense altars in every town in Judah, and the kingdom was at peace under him. 2CH 14:5

Look! The Lord is coming from his dwelling place; he comes down and treads the high places of the earth. Micah 1:3

Let’s pray
some high places
will be destroyed
over the next few years.

AND

I pray
YOU
win
on Tuesday!
