Reason 4: As the Surest and Purest Voice of God, the Bible is the Easiest and Most Dependable Way to Hear His Voice
Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
Wow, the Bereans were actually commended because they examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true!
Today, in contrast, many consider it unChristian to dare do anything besides fully accepting everything their pastor and, possibly, fellow professing Christians say is true and right when, in fact, it is unChristian not to examine the Scriptures every day to see which of the many voices we hear are true. We know Paul was not offended by the Bereans comparing what he said to the Scriptures, to see if what he taught was true, for he said:
Test everything. Hold on to the good.
Unlike listening to even the “best” preachers and sermons, and reading the “best” Christian books, we are not distracted when we read the Bible by having to ask: is it true? Our only aim when reading the Bible is discerning: what does it mean? And assuming we are under God’s special Grace, He will reveal and ensure we understand what He wants to say to us (and if not under His special Grace, we have much bigger problems – we are not saved!).
Some preachers and books can make their claims and logic very clear, unfortunately they can be clearly wrong! We only have to look around at the dramatically opposing “Christian” voices to know some are obviously false while some others may or may not be true and right. In the end, we are responsible for our lives (and ultimately our eternal souls) and for using the surest, purest and clearest Voice offered us in this greater than life or death effort.
This reason alone makes for a great, compelling and necessary reason to read the Bible and to do so every day!
